The two week vacation test

The Two-Week Vacation Test

August 02, 20261 min read

Here's a diagnostic question I ask almost every founder I sit down with, before we even get to numbers:

“If you took two full weeks off — no email, no calls — what would actually break?”

The answer tells me more than a financial statement does. If the honest answer is “quoting would stall” or “nobody knows how to handle a big customer complaint” or “payroll approvals would just sit there” — that's not a vacation problem. That's an ownership-dependency problem, and it's quietly capping how big and how sellable your business can ever become.

The good news: this is fixable. It's rarely dramatic. It's usually just a matter of writing down what's in your head and handing pieces of it to people you already trust.

Be honest — if you disappeared for two weeks starting tomorrow, what's the first fire that would break out?
