The Most Dangerous Sentence in a Family Business
“That's just how we've always done it.”
I hear some version of this in almost every family-owned company I sit down with, and I get why — there's real pride in it. Dad built it that way. It's worked for 30 years. Why mess with it.
But “always done it this way” is often just another way of saying “nobody's checked whether it still makes sense.”
Pricing that hasn't been reviewed since before your biggest input costs jumped. A sales process built around one guy who retired six years ago. A discount policy that exists because a customer complained once in 2011.
None of that is a character flaw — it's just what happens when a business grows faster than anyone has time to revisit its own habits.
What's one thing in your business that's “always been done that way” — and when's the last time anyone actually questioned it?
