The Free Trial That Became Permanent Infrastructure
Somebody on the ops team signed up for a free trial of a scheduling tool three years ago to solve one specific headache for one specific week.
By the time I showed up, half the shop floor depended on it daily, nobody remembered whose company card it was on, and when the trial quietly auto-converted to a paid plan (then just as quietly lapsed during a card update), it took the whole team half a day to notice production scheduling had gone dark.
Nobody planned for that tool to become infrastructure. It just did, the way trials always seem to — one urgent week at a time, until suddenly you can't run the business without it and nobody's officially responsible for it.
Is there a tool holding your business together right now that started as “let's just try this for a week”?
