Asked a controller how long it took to close out the month and get real numbers in front of the owner. Four days, she said, like it was obviously normal. Export from the accounting system, export from the CRM, export from a separate job-costing spreadsheet, then manually reconcile all three by hand because none of them agreed with each other automatically.

By the time the report landed on the owner's desk, it was describing a month that had already ended two weeks earlier. Useful for history. Not much use for actually steering anything.
